RION PLANTY 1974-2005

My best friend Rion Planty was diagnosed with AIDS November 2004.

By Christmas, he had lost his sight and all movement on the left side of his body. He was also diagnosed with PML, a rare infection in his brain and his system was not strong enough to fight it. When he was diagnosed, his T-Cell count was already so low; there was not much chance for recovery.

He was moved into The Carl Bean House; Los Angeles’ only AIDS Hospice. He was welcomed into a community that encourages a speedy recovery and support within a community of people facing similar challenges.

The staff was very supportive, knowledgeable and encouraging.

Without Carl Bean House, I don’t know where he would have been. At that time, his friends and family could not take care of him, as he could no longer walk or see. He could barely feed himself. The Carl Bean House was a wonderful solution to the issues he faced.

There has recently been threat of closure to the Carl Bean House,
due to lack of funding by the County of Los Angeles, and the State of California. We MUST not let this place close!

Rion passed away March 2, 2005 at Cedar-Sinai Hospital. He could have survived and continued to sparkle, had he been proactive about his condition earlier on. However, fear and denial took over. Please don’t let this happen to you or anyone you know. Take the next step and fight your way out of this horrible disease!

Rion will always remain my star, my best friend, my soul-mate.

There is still no cure for AIDS, and we need your help.

Please contact me if you are interested in making a donation to
The Carl Bean House Or supporting AIDS Walk Los Angeles’ Team Superstars!

We have lots of fundraising events coming up and we’d love to have you there.
Please email me and I’ll add you to my database so you can be notified on all our efforts. Thanks!

We can make a difference, together!

Sincerely,

Juli Star
